Today, the Senate has adopted a resolution expressing its profound sympathy and sincere condolences on the death of former Senator Rene Saguisag. 🕊️

When the Senators of the 8th Congress first convened, their first agenda was nation building. They had to rebuild institutions which had been weakened. Foremost among them was the Senate itself, which had been padlocked since 1972.

To quote one Senator of the time, with some amendments: "We are rebuilding the cathedral of democracy. We must each lay our share of bricks.” That Senator was none other than Rene Saguisag. And he helped lay down the foundations of our new democracy.

Many entries in our statute books are Saguisag laws. Foremost among these is the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees. That law was no mere token to good governance. For Senator Rene himself embodied ethics and had public service in his blood.

He gave up a lucrative law office to defend the helpless. Those who had less in law would have more in justice. He spoke eloquently in the defense of civil liberties. And he always stood in defense of an independent Senate. And most importantly- he was a full-time public servant, not a part-time politician.

He believed that legislators should fully dedicate their lives to the cause. And then step away from the glitz and power, without any regrets. These are principles worth emulating and embodying.

From this day, and always, iwagayway natin ang bandila ni Rene Saguisag dito sa Senado. Maraming salamat po, at Mabuhay si Senator Saguisag! Mabuhay ang Senado!
