MANILA – Two senators from the Senate’s minority group want reforms in the system of spending the priority development assistance fund or pork barrel instead of abolishing it, amid a scam involving several colleagues.

Sen. Nancy Binay said at a press forum on Monday that one such reform is to prohibit the allocation funds for nongovernment organizations, noting how it is prone to corruption.

In the so-called pork barrel scam, several lawmakers’ PDAF reportedly went to bogus NGOs that presented ghost projects.

Sen. JV Ejercito agreed with Binay, saying he would rather spend his pork barrel on medical assistance and scholarships.

Binay and Ejercito also backed Senate finance committee chair Francis Escudero’s proposal for line-item budgeting for the PDAF in the 2014 General Appropriations Bill.
